10 Easy Tips to Improve Your Ezine

Writing and publishing an ezine is a very important part of your online business so you want to make it the best possible ezine you can. I have made mistakes and changed and re-changed my ezine many times to make it the best it can be. I am still always looking for ways to improve MOE. Over the years I have learned a few simple ways to improve my ezine. You can easily implement these tips into your ezine.

1. ALWAYS, ALWAYS have your email, along with your name and url right at the top of your ezine. Unbelievably, I have read ezines where I could NOT find the email or even the name of the publisher!!! Also at the end of your ezine have name, address, phone number, and email and url again for easy access. Nothing is worse than trying to find contact info that for some reason is invisible!

2. Make sure you also always provide your subscribe and unsubscribe info as well. I would suggest putting this info at the bottom of the ezine. If you post your unsubscribe url right at the top of your ezine it is like you are inviting your subscribers to unsubscribe.

3. Provide a forum for your readers to interact with you and your other readers. A section entitled, Reader's Corner or Reader's Comments, where they can send in their comments, questions, feedback or whatever. This gives them a chance to become a part of the ezine. This also helps build the reader- publisher relationship that is very important!

4. Keep your ezine clean and sharp looking. Don't add too many of the squiggles and decorations. They may look *cute* but they sometimes make it hard to read your ezine, thus prompting the ole' delete finger to become activated!

5. ALWAYS provide some original content. Writing articles is a great way of doing this. If you are not yet comfortable writing articles, (Yes, you can), write an editorial in each issue. Talk a bit about yourself, the latest happenings in the business, what is going on around the net, etc., things of that nature. This is a chance to bring out your personality, the main thing that makes your ezine unique!!

6. Having too many ads in each issue is a great way of bringing down the value of your ezine. I would suggest no more than 4 or 5 per issue. Reading an ezine that has 20 or 30 ads (oh yeah, I've seen them) is not very interesting or realistic. Most people would not even go through the whole thing. Here comes that delete finger again!! You want your advertisers to get more value for their money and having a limited number of ads is one of the best ways of doing this.

7. I think adding a small section for this 'n that is a good idea also. Some humor, a little fun, interesting tidbits, jokes, stories, etc. We are business men and women, but we don't have to be 100% business, 100% of the time!!

8. Privacy Policy - Put a privacy policy towards the top of the ezine. Let your readers know their privacy is safe with you and your ezine.

9. Proofread - Always proofread and double-check your text. You do not want your ezine to look like it was written by a 10 year old. Correct all spelling and grammatical errors.

10. Give your ezine an interesting and pulling name. I have subscribed to most ezines just by the name alone. If the name gets my attention, I subscribe.

Names like:

Power Promotion Ezine

Marketing Mania Ezine

Web Success Ezine

are short and to the point. They also make me want to read more.

Names like:

Internet Marketing News

John Doe's Ezine

Home Business News

are more generic and do not get my attention! They lack the "oomf" that make me want to subscribe.

I hope some of these tips give you an idea of how you can improve your ezine and make it the best it can be. Remember that ezine publishing is one of the most essential aspects of your online success. If you are in this business, you should be able to say, "I have My Own Ezine! How To Turn Your Newsletter Into a Web Page... In 45 Seconds!

Do you place back-issues of your Newsletter on your website?

There are two good reasons why you should:

(1) It shows potential subscribers that you're serious about your Newsletter

(2) Newsletters are rich in keywords, so it's a very good idea to turn back-issues of your Newsletter into HTML documents and then submit them to the major Search Engines

Here's a little trick that will help you format your Newsletter as an HTML document:

Copy the text of your Newsletter into a text editor such as NOTEPAD.

Then copy the text from NOTEPAD into Microsoft Word. You'll notice that in your Word document, each line ends with a Paragraph Mark.

Now go to EDIT | REPLACE.

Place your cursor in the first field, where it says 'Look For'.

Now click on 'More' and then on 'Special' and select the first item in the list ('Paragraph Mark'). The symbol for a paragraph mark will now appear in the first field (a hat followed by a 'p').

Now place your cursor in the field below, where it says 'Replace With' and type . Then click on 'Replace All'.

You'll find that every single paragraph mark in your Word document has been replaced with .

Now copy the entire Word document into a new NOTEPAD document and save it, using the file extension .html (Note: NOTEPAD doesn't offer you the option to save as an HTML document, but don't worry; just type .html after the name you gave the file, and it will be saved as an HTML document).

Close that html document and then open it again and you'll find that your Newsletter is perfectly formatted, with the exact same line breaks that you had in the email version of your Newsletter.

Using this technique it takes me about 45 seconds to turn a back-issue of my Newsletter into an HTML document!

Create An Ezine To Get People Back To Your Site

I know you've worked hard on your website. I know it looks pretty good - in fact, it's fantastic. However, you are facing one huge problem - getting people to come back.

Look at it this way: if you are serious, you should be updating your web site on a regular basis. While not everyone can update their site several times a day like I do, you should at least add something relatively significant on a weekly basis. If you have any doubts about that time frame, remember, the web is huge and people who surf the web need (require) constant changes. Nothing will die faster than a stale site!

Okay, so you are updating your site every single day (or weekly or whatever). So how do people know this? You can (and should) do a number of things, including specifying a "what's new" section on your index page, referencing the changes in editorial columns and so on.

However, the most important task you can do is create a regular newsletter which let's people know what's changed.

Do NOT send this newsletter out to everyone on the planet - that's called SPAM. What you want to do is sprinkle sign-up buttons and links throughout your site. Put at least one link on every single page of your site. Use buttons, blink it if you have to, but get your visitor's attention to your sign-up links. Some sites even offer a free give away (an ebook, report, shareware program or something) if you simply sign up for the newsletter.

Why is this important? Because no matter what your site is about, commercial or home page, if you can get someone to sign up for your newsletter you've found someone who is interested in what you've got to say. They gave you a way to contact them, willingly and without being forced, and they gave you permission (by virtue of signing up) to send them information.

These people are the most valuable people you can get as visitors. They liked what you had to say. They actually want you to tell them when something new happens so they can come back. Take advantage of that - send them a content filled newsletter. Include something special in each issue, something more than just some links or a few useless words. I like to include an article, a list of new or changed information on my site and a few useful links. ALWAYS include a way to opt-out - at the bottom of the newsletter is the traditional place (do not make your readers search for this).

An ad or two in the newsletter is fine, but be careful - do not include more unless you specify that in the signup page. You do not even want to have any appearance of spam.

Remember your goal - get them to your web site. If you've got something to sell, do it on your web site. People do not generally like to receive ads (even willingly) in their emails, but they love articles and useful tips and even jokes. But more than a couple of ads are tacky. And please, avoid advertising your affiliate or pay-to- surf programs in your ezine. Many spam filters will delete any messages containing that junk right away (mine deletes them sight- unseen).

So get your visitors to sign up for a regular newsletter, and send it out as often as you can. You will be rewarded with a steady stream of return visits.

1. You will create residual income. For example, if you charge a monthly subscription fee, you will get recurring income every month.

2. You won't have to spend all your time marketing to gain new subscribers. Just get and keep enough subscribers to reach your monthly income goal.

3. You can figure how many subscribers it'll take to meet your income goal. Note on your ad that you'll only accept a limited number of subscribers.
